[Genting Highlands, Malaysia] The Laughing Fish By Harry Ramsden @ Sky Avenue
By Elin Chow - Wednesday, January 11, 2023
The Laughing Fish By Harry Ramsden is a pub-restaurant located at Genting Sky Avenue High Line Roof Top Market.
Established in 1928, Harry Ramsden is known to be the longest established restaurant chain in the UK and is world famous for its fish and chips. There is usually long queue outside the restaurant during peak hours, but luckily we didn't have to wait too long for a table. For those on the move, you may also order takeaway from a separate Harry Ramsden takeaway counter right next to The Laughing Fish.
The interior of the restaurant is absolutely stunning. This is definitely one of the most instagrammable restaurant in Genting Highlands.
There is both outdoor and indoor seating. You can sit right at the bar on traditional wooden stools, on the Chester sofa inside, or on the long wooden benches outside. However, it might be hard for you to choose where to sit during peak hours.
I feel that the overall interior of the place suits all occasions, from casual lunches to special celebrations. The spacious and modern interior offers a casual and relaxed dining atmosphere.
Fish & Chips
Price: RM 57
We ordered their signature fish and chips. The North Atlantic fish is coated with crispy, fresh batter that is still made from Harry's own secret recipe and cooked fresh to order every single time.
It comes in three sizes, from regular, large to legendary. There are two types of fish to choose - Cod and Haddock, both of which are caught in the Barents and Norwegian seas. According to the menu, Cod fish gives a light and flaky texture while Haddock is chunkier and more flavorful.
We ordered regular size Cod Fish (RM 57), which is served with double-cooked chips and two different sauces. Deep fried to a luscious golden crisp, it was light with no excessive oil dripping from the fish.
I like the texture of the fish as well. It was delightfully firm and tender. The mild-flavored fish goes absolutely well with the accompanying in-house made tartar sauce and gravy. Some people might find the fish flavorless, but I like it a lot. I would recommend you to squeeze the lemon over the battered fish before you dip the pieces into the tartar sauce. This helps to enhance the taste of the fish.
The double-cooked chips, however, were a little lacking. They were not crispy, a bit soggy and probably, a little too thick. Despite that, I still enjoy eating the chips.
Cod Burger
Price: RM 40
We also ordered their Cod Burger to share. The burger was actually very similar to their cod fish and chips, but in a burger version. It was made of their famous cod, tartar sauce, mixed lettuce, tomato and coleslaw.
The Cod Burger might be a great alternative for people who don't like fish and chips. I like that that sturdy yet soft bun didn't get soggy and gross from the tartar sauce. Even though it was delicious, I think I should have ordered their Beef Burger instead so I could try something different.
Harry's Battered Onion Rings
Price: RM 10
Other than Fish & Chips, the restaurant also offers a range of small bites or side dishes. We ordered their Harry's Battered Onion Rings to try as we noticed that a few tables had ordered this.
Deep fried to golden crisp, the large and thick onion rings were served with mayonnaise and thousand island sauce. They were light and crisp on the outside and sweet and tender on the inside. I love dip them in the thousand island sauce. It was so good! However, it was a little oily, but it was still acceptable.
We had a pleasant dining experience at The Laughing Fish. The environment was cozy and the quality of food was good. However, price is slightly on the high side and service was not exceptional as well.
Other than eating, it is also a nice place to have a drink and relax. The pub restaurant offers an extensive list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks ranging from beers, ciders from the tap, gin and tonics to cocktails, mocktails, wine and spirit, as well as Laughing Fish signature lemonades.
