Tonkatsu By Ma Maison is a chain restaurant from Japan that specializes in Tonkatsu (pork cutlet). Founded by Akinori Terazawa in Tokyo, Japan back in 1976, Ma Maison currently has 8 outlets in Kuala Lumpur .
The menu is simple, consisting mainly of Katsu, which is a deep fried cutlet of meat or seafood made with flaky Japanese Panko breadcrumbs. Their main specialty is Tonkatsu (Pork cutlet). However, for people who don't like pork, they serve Ebi (shrimp) katsu and chicken katsu as well.
We ordered their Hire Katsu set (RM 32.90), which comes with deep fried pork fillet, shredded cabbage. Japanese steamed rice or multigrain rice, miso soup. pickled radish and a choice of hot or cold green tea.
The pork cutlet is fried to a beautiful shade of golden brown. They were light and crispy, but most importantly, not oily at all. However, the meat was a bit dry on the inside because they were very lean. We should have ordered the Rosu Katsu set which uses pork loin instead of pork fillet. The reason why we ordered Hire Katsu instead of Rosu Katsu was because we thought that pork fillets are fatter. However, it seemed that we were wrong.
I love the finely shredded cabbage which went perfectly well with the sesame dressing that was provided at every table. It was so fresh, crisp and refreshing
Although the food is slightly pricey, I think it is very value for money. The portion was also generous, so it was very filling. Another great news for big eaters is that you can refill your rice, shredded cabbage and miso as much as you want!
