Robataya Izakaya is a type of informal gastropub that specialize in Robatayaki. Robatayaki (fireside cooking) refers to a method of cooking, similar to barbecue, in which premium pieces of meat or seafood are cooked varying speed over hot charcoal. The Robatayaki cooking style uses a sunken hearth called "Irori", which is the most authentic way for charcoal grill.

The restaurant currently has three outlets scattered across Klang Valley, as well as one outlet in Penang. We visited their branch at One Utama Shopping Centre.

The restaurant has an extensive menu featuring Sushi, Sashimi, Nabe Mono, Tempura, Kushiyaki, Yakimono, Sarada, Tataki, Menrui, Donburi, Teppanyaki, Agemono and Robatayaki. There are a total of more than 400 dishes for diners to choose from. Many ingredients used are air-flown directly from Japan, which ensured the freshness and quality of the dishes.

Other than food, Robataya also serve a wide variety of alcoholic beverages including draft beer, sake, sochu, wine, whiskey and cocktails. You can drink and enjoy delicious food at the same time.

Honjitsu no Sashimi Moriawase (Assorted Sashimi Platter)

Price: RM 228 (2 Pcs)

Robataya serves premium seafood air-flown directly from Tokyo's Toyosu Fish Market. We ordered their Honjitsu no Sashimi Moriawase (assorted sashimi) set for two persons. The set consists of 8 kinds chef's selection fresh air-flown seafood of the day. We got Hotate (Scallops), Nama Uni (Sea Urchin), Salmon, Shake Harasu (Salmon Belly), Kampachi (Amberjack), Tako (Octopus), Botan Ebi (Botan Shrimp) and Ikura (Salmon Roe) on that day.

Each kind of sashimi can also be ordered ala carte. However, if you are a lover  of sashimi, I would highly recommend you to order the Honjitsu no Sashimi Moriawase set. The set will allow you to enjoy different types of raw seafood in one dish. Each slice was thick and fresh. So delicious!

Buta Bara (Grilled Skewered Pork Belly)

Price: RM 10

Buta Bara, or Grilled Skewered Pork Belly is one of their popular dishes. The thickly sliced pork belly is threaded on skewer, and grilled until slightly charred. Lightly salted, it was smoky and savory.

Ika Geso Karaage (Deep Fried Squid Tentacles)

Price: RM 22

Their deep fried squid tentacles were addictively delicious and it was hard to stop eating. Served hot and crispy with a slice of lemon and mayonnaise, the squid tentacles were well-seasoned and flavorful. They were deep-fried to firm-to-the-bite yet not rubbery. So chewy and crunchy!

Grilled Salmon Belly

Price: RM 29

We also ordered Grilled Salmon Belly, which is one of their signature Robatayaki dishes. The salmon bellies were grilled until the skin were crisp. The unique Robatayaki cooking method has retained the the natural buttery flavor and juices of the salmon belles. They were crispy and smoky on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside.

Zaru Soba

Price: RM 21

Served cold on ice with a light and savory dipping sauce, Zaru Soba is a simple yet refreshing meal.

CONCLUSION

Prices are slightly on the higher side but the portions were pretty generous. Service was prompt and efficient. If you are looking to experience authentic Japanese fare in a Japanese setting, Robataya Izakaya is definitely worth checking out.
