Located in Genting Sempah, about 45 minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur, Restoran Tin Yun is a hidden gem tucked away in the forest and mountains, offering a green escape away from the crowded bustling city.

The location of the restaurant is pretty secluded. It is located off the Karak Expressway, at the foot of Genting Highlands. Therefore, the restaurant is a great place for people who are travelling up or down Genting Highlands to stop over and have a meal.

Surrounded by beautiful thick green foliage on all sides, the space of the restaurant looks delightfully spacious due to the the natural light space being open up. You can hear the birds chirping and insects humming while you enjoy your meal.

The restaurant can get pretty packed during lunch and dinner time. However, we arrived slightly earlier before lunch time, so the restaurant was quite empty.

The menu is quite extensive, which offers a variety of river fish, prawns, kampung chicken, pork, lamb, seafood, tofu, vegetables, and a selection of "wild" meat such as soft-shelled turtle and wild boar. Since the restaurant wasn't very busy at the time, we didn't have to wait very long for our food to be served.

Claypot Kangkung 瓦锅翁菜

Stir-fried in a claypot with chili and salted fish, the Kangkung were aromatic and robust in flavor. A simple but delicious dish!

Steamed Wild White Whiskered Grandpa Catfish (Pak Sou Gong) 清蒸野生白须公

Price: RM 80

The restaurants in this area are famed for their wild caught fresh river fish. We ordered a wild Pak Sou Gong, which, literally translated, means White Whiskered Grandpa Catfish. The fish weighed about 2 kg, but the restaurant split it into half, so it was about a kg.

Steamed simply with soy sauce, ginger, green scallions and Chinese wine, the fish was cooked just right. The meat was smooth and tender with an almost melt in mouth texture. It was also very fresh, perfectly seasoned, which goes perfectly well with rice.

Claypot Glass Noodles With Giant River Prawns 冬粉河虾煲

Price: RM 224 (RM 14 per 100g)

Giant river prawns are equally famous as well. We ordered Claypot Glass Noodles With Giant River Prawns to try because it was one of their famous dishes. This was also the most expensive dish that we had ordered. Glass noodles (or Chinese vermicelli) and giant river prawns are braised together in a claypot with lots of black pepper. It was then garnished with tons of green scallions before serving.

This was a simple one pot dish that is packed with flavors and textures. The giant river prawns were big, fresh, firm and sweet. The glass noodles absorbed the sweet flavor of the prawns nicely and spiced with the pervasive flavor of black pepper. Cooking the dish in a claypot also keep the food warm for a longer time. Therefore, you don't have to worry that the soup will turn cold while you eat.

Wild Boar Curry 咖喱山猪肉

Price: RM 20 (S)

Other than fresh river fish and giant river prawns, most of the restaurants in the area also serve Wild Boar Curry. Compared to the Curry Wild Boarlet that we ate at The Fantasy Valley Restaurant, this was totally underwhelming. The wild boar meat were very tough and dry. Although one might argue that the meat of adult wild boar is not as tender as wild boarlet, this was still very disappointing when I compared this to the most of the wild boar curry that I have tasted in other restaurants.

Although the curry gravy was rich and savory, it was too thick to our liking. Anyway, there wasn't much gravy either, so we couldn't add and mix it with rice.

Spicy Stir-Fried Pork Intestines with Dried Shrimp 虾米生肠

Price: RM 20 (S)

We also ordered Spicy Stir-Fried Pork Intestine with Dried Shrimp. I don't know whether this was delicious or not because I don't eat animal intestine.

THE VERDICT

The bill came up to RM 300 plus for the 5 of us. Overall, the food were good and the environment was comfortable to dine in. Prices of food were pretty reasonable as well. We would definitely be back again!
