Restoran Boston Baru (New Boston Klang), or affectionately known as Boston Lala, is one of the most popular Chinese restaurant in Klang. It started off as a humble hawker stall operating in front of their current premise in 1989. As business improved, they relocated to the current premise, and has remained in the same location till today.

The restaurant is notorious for its long wait time. It is so popular that patrons have to queue and wait hours to be seated. In fact, the queues start to form as early as 3.30 pm, before they officially open for business.

We arrived at 6.30 am on a Saturday evening. As expected, there was already a long queue of hungry diners waiting to be seated. Upon arrival, we immediately went to the booth at the entrance of restaurant to obtain a queue number. Your queue number will be called once a table becomes available.

There were about 15 groups of people ahead of us in the queue, and we waited for almost an hour to get seated. There are a lot of mosquitoes as we were seated on the dimly lit sidewalk outside the shop lot. It was hot and humid without any fans and we were sweating like crazy.

STEAMED CLAMS IN SUPERIOR SOUP

Price: RM 31 (L)

The restaurant is famous for its steamed clams in superior soup (Siong Tong Lala). This is definitely the must-order dish if you visit the New Boston Restaurant. You will see this dish on almost every table at the restaurant.

We ordered two large portions of clams to share among the 5 of us. The juicy Manila clams are cooked in a rich broth with lots of chopped chills, sliced ginger and Chinese wine. Then it was topped with fried garlic before serving.

The broth was extremely spicy and packed with rich umami flavor of the sea. The spiciness mainly comes from the chopped chills and sliced ginger while the Chinese wine enhanced the sweetness of the broth. Despite the spiciness, the broth was deliciously addictive. If you have a low spice tolerance, there is a non-spicy version as well.

The clams were fresh, succulent and naturally sweet. Every clam leaves a burst of spiciness, with their fresh sweetness retained that will leave you craving for more! Don't worry about biting into nasty grit as the clams were thoroughly cleaned with all the mud and sand sediments removed.

DEEP-FRIED PORK BELLY

Price: RM 25 (S)

We also ordered Deep Fried Pork Belly to try. Marinated with fermented red bean curd, the pork belly were flavorful and robust. However, the meat was too lean, without much fatty layers, so they were  a bit dry and hard after deep fried.

MOONLIGHT KUEY TEOW

Price: RM 22 (L)

Topped with a raw egg yolk, the Moonlight Kuey Teow (Yuet Guong Hor) was silky smooth and imbued with wok hei. Stir-fry over high heat, the rice noodles has a slightly charred flavor. It has a nice balance of sweet and savory, and was sufficiently moist without being overly greasy. Although this was not the best Moonlight Kuey Teow I have ever tasted, it was still delicious.

NESTUM MANTIS PRAWNS

Price: RM 35 (L)

The Nestum Mantis Prawn is also one of their must order dish. However, it was a disappointment. The batter-coated mantis prawns are deep fried until crispy before stir-frying them with a generous amount of Nestum cereal, curry leaves and butter.  While it was buttery and savory, the Nestum were a tad too sweet to our liking.  In fact, the sweetness has completely overpowered the buttery flavor of the dish.

WAN TAN HOR

Price: RM 19 (L)

Other than Moonlight Kuey Teow, we also ordered Wan Tan Hor, which is stir-fried flat rice noodle in egg gravy.  The noodle has ample of Wok Hei and the egg gravy was thick and silky smooth.

CONCLUSION

After we were seated, we waited over an hour for our food to arrive. Personally, I feel that the food at Restoran Boston Baru are not worth the two hours long wait. But don't get me wrong. It is not because the food are mediocre. Although the steamed clams soup was exceptionally delicious, the other dishes were just average. Therefore, it was not worth waiting two hours just to eat the steamed clams soup.

It is hard to say whether I would visit this restaurant as the long queue is really a strong deterrent. To avoid the crazy long waiting time, I highly recommend that you arrive before they officially open for business, so that you will be in the queue as their first round of customers. Otherwise, be prepared for a long wait. You may also want to visit the restaurant on a weekday rather than on the weekends as it is less busy.
