After spending two days in the historic city of Lucerne, we checked out of our accommodation and made our way to the train station. We will be heading to Lauterbrunnen, where we will use it as base for exploring Jungfrau's top sights. Check out our 11D10 Switzerland Trip Itinerary + Overview post.

GETTING FROM LUCERNE TO LAUTERBRUNNEN

There is no direct train from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen. To get to Lauterbrunnen from Lucerne, you will need to change to a connecting train in Interlaken Ost. The journey from Lucerne to Interlaken is connected by the Luzern-Interlaken Express on the panoramic Golden Pass Line.

The Golden Pass Line is one the most famous scenic train routes in Switzerland, connecting Lucerne and Montreux. Unlike the Bernina Express and Glacier Express, the Golden Pass Line is not one direct train. The train route consists of three sections: Lucerne to Interlaken Ost, Interlaken Ost to Zweisimmen and Zweisimmen to Montreux.

Direct trains from Lucerne to Interlaken departs every hour, starting at 6.06 am. There are also other trains running from Lucerne to Interlaken during these intervals. However, I would really recommend that you wait for a direct train as it is easier, quicker and more convenient.

You can check the train timetable and information on SBB app. To search for the train timetable from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen, you have to enter Luzen, Bahnhof as the departure point and Lauterbrunnen as the arrival point.

TICKET

As the journey from Lucerne to Interlaken is part of a panoramic train ride, the train tickets are a little more expensive than regional trains. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines at Lucerne Main Station.

We decided to get first class tickets for this journey. A one-way, first class ticket from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen costs 35.70 CHF with a half fare card. If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, you can travel on the Golden Pass train for free.

The journey from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost will take 1 hour 49 minutes. You will need to transfer to a connecting train at Interlaken Ost Station in order to get to Lauterbrunnen. Trains to Lauterbrunnen usually leave from Platform 2A at Interlaken Ost Station, and departs every 30 minutes. It will take 20 minutes to get from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen by train. Although the train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen is not part of the Golden Pass Line route, the train ride is still wonderfully scenic.

The Luzern-Interlaken Express trains are air-conditioned and equipped with oversized panoramic windows that stretch up to the ceiling. The seats in the first class cabin are comfortable and spacious with sizeable tables. There are also adequate space for us to store our large luggage.

THE RIDE

Riding a scenic train in Switzerland is an experience in itself. As the train weaves its way into the Swiss countryside, the view from the windows changes from concrete buildings to rolling hills carpeted in lush greenery, azure lakes and glacier-fed streams. Every corner of the country makes you feel like you have stepped into a postcard.

I would recommend sitting on the right side of the train to get the best view on the Luzern-Interlaken Express. Throughout the scenic ride, the picturesque landscapes kept our eyes glued to the large panoramic windows. I was trying to take pictures of the stunning landscapes during the train ride, but it was quite challenging due to the glare and reflections on the glass. Unlike regional trains, the windows on scenic trains cannot be opened, which create a terrible glare and reflection that makes photographing the landscapes incredibly hard. That was really frustrating!

ACCOMMODATION

Upon arriving at Lauterbrunnen Station, we loaded up Google Map on my phone and headed straight to the Valley Hostel for check in. For budget travelers, the Valley Hostel is probably one of the cheapest accommodation options that you can find in Lauterbrunnen.

The Valley Hostel is conveniently located, about 5 minutes walk from Lauterbrunnen Station and Coop supermarket. It has 26 rooms and a total of 92 beds spread over three chalets. There are different types of rooms for guests to choose from, ranging from double private rooms up to 8-bed dorm rooms. Complimentary parking is available for guests staying at the hostel. There is also a large luggage storage room where you can leave your luggage for free.

As the front desk has limited service hours, the hostel has implemented a self check-in process for guests. Although the standard check in time is 4 pm, we are allowed to check-in at 12 pm.

Due to its popularity, the hostel is often booked out quickly. I would really recommend you to book your stay at least 6 months in advance to secure your preferred room.

Each of the chalet has three floors. On the ground floor, you will find a communal kitchen and dining area. There is a separate toilet on the ground floor as well. The rooms are located on the second and third floors.

Our room is located on the second floor in Chalet 3. We have booked a double private room instead of a dorm room as it offers more privacy and comfort.

Fitted with parquet flooring, our private room was extremely spacious, clean and comfortable. It comes with two twin beds, an open cabinet, a small table and two chairs. Towels and bed linens are provided, but we are required to make our own beds. Although the beds are not the most comfortable, we still slept well through the nights.

We enjoyed an excellent view of the mountains and lush greenery through the windows in our room.

The room also opens out to balcony with amazing views of the surrounding mountains and Staubbach Waterfall.

We can spent hours sitting on the balcony admiring the beauty of the valley.

At night, we can see that the illuminated Staubbach Waterfall without leaving our room.

There are four rooms, with two shower rooms and two toilets on our floor. So, we just have to share a shower room and a toilet with the room next door.

The toilets and shower rooms are cleaned daily and were spotless. Shower gel, shampoo and hair dryer are not provided. Please remember to bring your own toiletries if you plan to book a stay here.

On the ground floor, there is a shared kitchen and dining area. The dining area is pretty spacious, with sufficient tables and chairs for every guest.

Guests are free to use the shared kitchen to prepare their own meals. This is also one of the main reason why we decided to stay in a hostel. The shared kitchen will be cleaned extensively every day, so it is spotless despite being used by so many people.

The kitchen is well equipped with all necessary appliances and utensils for guests who want to prepare their meals. Just make sure you clean up after yourself after using the kitchen. This includes wiping down the counters, washing the pots, pans and utensils and return them to the designated storage area.  There is also a "Free Food" basket that contains the food items left behind by previous guests.

The shelves in the refrigerators are labelled with room numbers. We are required to store our food in our designated shelf. If you are unlucky, your food might get stolen.

After settling in, we headed out to Coop to get lunch and some food ingredients so that we can cook our own meals.

EXPLORING LAUTERBRUNNEN

Lauterbrunnen is one of the most popular destination in Switzerland, boasting glacier waterfalls, hiking trails, dramatic vertical rock walls, snow-capped mountains and quaint villages. Often referred to as the gateway to the Jungfrau region, the authentic Swiss town is nestled in an U-shaped valley in the Alps between gigantic rock faces and mountain peaks. Surrounded on three sides by the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains, the beautiful valley is also the location inspiration for JRR Tolkien's Rivendell Valley in the Lord of the Rings.

Home to 72 waterfalls, the picturesque valley is also known as "The Valley of 72 Waterfalls". The main street is lined with shops, hotels, restaurants and cafes, with stunning mountains and the Staubbach Waterfall serving as the backdrop.

The village of Lauterbrunnen is quite small, and can be easily explored on foot.  As you stroll through  the village, you can see the iconic yellow and green Wengernalp train far in the distance as it travels through Lauterbrunnen to Wengen. Established in 1893, the Wengernalp railway is the longest cog railway in the world, with a total length of 19,114 meters. The cogwheel train connects Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, a car free village in the middle of the Alps, and travels via Wengen and Wengernalp up to Kleine Scheidegg at 6762 feet.

STAUBBACH WATERFALL

The Staubbach Waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in Switzerland, and the key landmark in Lauterbrunnen. Standing at a whooping 297 m (974 ft) tall, the Staubbach Waterfall is the third highest waterfalls in Switzerland.

The gorgeous waterfall is located at the end of the village, which is about 10 minutes walk from the Lauterbrunnen train station. It was easy walk along concrete pavement along the main road. As you stroll down the village, you will be able to enjoy the view of the impressive Staubbach Waterfall. The loud roar of the waterfall can also be heard from a distance away.

Follow the road down and you will eventually reach the base of the waterfall. There is a big gravel area below the waterfall where you can relax and enjoy the splendour of the waterfall. Here, you will also find a steep flight of stairs that you can walk up to reach the Stabbauch gallery, a platform embedded in the cliffs, behind the waterfall.

The path is only open during the summer months due to safety concerns in icy conditions. Do note that the rocky trail can be slippery and wet, and you may also get wet from the waterfall spray. I would recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes if you plan to hike up to the waterfall.

We didn't hike up to the waterfall because it was quite an intense climb. But we were still able to admire the majestic beauty of the Staubbach Waterfall from below. The base of the waterfall also offers many jaw-dropping photo opportunities.

One of the most striking feature of Stabbauch Waterfall is its nearly vertical drop. The waterfall cascades down 297 meters over the edge of the cliff, which turns into spray and mist, creating a mystical atmosphere.

Lauterbrunnen is also a hiker's paradise. One of the most relaxing and easy trails is the walk along the Lauterbrunnen valley. The trail starts at Lauterbrunnen and ends at Stechelberg.

After visting the Staubbach Waterfall, we continued down the main trail leading to Stechelberg. The trail travels through lush green meadows with the striking Breithorn in constant view at the end of the valley. It was a easy hike, or rather, a relaxing stroll. The gravel footpath is flat and wide, which makes suitable for beginner hikers as there is not much elevation. It is probably the easiest walk in the area.

As you walk down the trail, you'll be treated to breathtaking views and photo opportunities in all directions. The sound of cowbells can also often be heard in the distance. We enjoyed taking leisurely stroll along this trail. It was relaxing. However, we didn't complete the entire trail because it was scorching hot.

Other than hiking, Lauterbrunnen is also a popular destination for paragliders. On a clear day, you will often spot paragliders soaring around in the blue sky above as it is a weather-dependent activity.

The trail will eventually reach a junction with a downhill path leading to the Lutschine Promenade.

The "Promenade" goes right along the Weisse Lutschine, or White Lutschine (White River), which flows through Lauterbrunnen valley to Zweilutschinen.

The river has a beautiful whitish blue color as it is fed by the melt waters from the glacier.

We enjoyed strolling along the picturesque river. The path was almost empty, and the only sound we heard was the gushing of the river and the chirping of birds.

There were very few benches along the promenade, and all of them were occupied when we were there. So, we headed back to the main trail after taking some photos.

Then we made our way back to the hostel and cooked dinner with the ingredients we bought from Coop earlier. It was a simple but satisfying meal.

Surrounded by gigantic cliff faces, roaring waterfalls and traditional wooden chalets, Lauterbrunnen is exactly what most people picture when they think of Switzerland. It is a destination that will leave you in awe of the natural beauty.
