Sitting on the mouth of the Terengganu river, Kuala Terengganu is the state capital of the Muslim-dominated state of Terengganu.  Food lovers will spoilt for choice as Kuala Terengganu has much to offer - from Chinese to Peranakan cuisine to typical Malay dishes. However, most of the Chinese restaurants and stalls are concentrated in Kampung Cina, or Chinatown.

We ate at T. Homemade Cafe, a small coffee shop that is located next to the Chinatown's Dragon Gate. Although it is called a 'cafe', it is actually a coffee shop consisting of a few different food stalls offering a variety of food.

The coffee shop opens early in the morning and is especially busy during breakfast time because lots of tourists would stop here to grab a quick bite before heading to the nearby islands. But we were surprised that this place received very little reviews even though it is quite popular with both locals and tourists.

Roti Paung

Roti Paung, or Roti Paun is a must order here as it is a specialty in Kuala Terengganu. It is fondly known as "xiao mian bao (小面包) in Chinese, which literally translate to little bread. The toasted small rectangle bread loaf is made up of 4 to 6 buns and served with slice of butter and homemade Kaya. You can spread the butter and Kaya to the bread according to your personal preference.

The bread is toasted till crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. It is best to be eaten warm with or without filling. There are also ready packed ones available if you would like to bring some back home.

Fish Paste Pan Mee

I would also highly recommend anyone to try Fish Paste (Yu Wat) noodles here. It is sold by a stall called Hong Jie Yu Wat Pan Mee (洪姐鱼滑板面). The stall offers an assortment of noodles like Pan Mee, Yee Mee and Mian Xian for you to choose from. But whatever noodles you order, make sure you order their Fish Paste.

I ordered a bowl of Fish Paste Pan Mee because I think this is what the stall specialize in. It comes with 4 pieces of fish paste, deep fried anchovies, some minced pork and veggies. The Pan Mee is silky smooth, lightly chewy and bouncy. It is so smooth that sometimes it is hard to grip them with chopsticks. I also like that that broth is clear, non-greasy and flavorful.

The fish paste is handmade and is extremely smooth, soft and springy. You can also order fish ball if you do not like fish paste. But I would really recommend trying their Fish Paste out since it is their specialty. Both the Pan Mee and fish paste were good. This is probably the most delicious Fish Paste Pan Mee I have eaten so far!

There was also a small stall located at the entrance of the shop selling a variety of Chinese desserts and we bought some fried spring rolls to snack on. The spring rolls was super light, tender and crispy but nothing really exceptional.

T. Homemade Cafe is also well-known for their steamed Keropok Lekor, but we did not order any to try because we were already full.
