Located in the town centre of Kuantan, UK Loh serves arguably one of the best Cantonese roasted delights in the city. Open for breakfast and lunch only, the restaurant is usually packed during peak hours as it is very popular among locals and tourists alike.
Its name, “油鸡佬" (You Ji Lao) literally means soy sauce chicken in Chinese. However, despite its name, the restaurant is actually famous for their Roast Pork (Siew Yoke), Char Siew and roast duck.
For the two of us, we ordered a bottom quarter of roast duck with drumstick and a mixed platter of roast pork and Char Siew to share.
Price: RM 25
CHAR SIEW
Beautifully caramelized, the Char Siew glisten with just the right amount of char around the edge. With the perfect fat-to-lean meat ratio, the Char Siew was juicy, succulent and almost melt-in-your-mouth. The fatty texture blends very nicely with the lean meat. However, for those who are not a fan of fatty meat, you will probably not enjoy eating this.
The Char Siew has a balanced savoury sweet flavor and did not contain any char burnt taste. I always hate Char Siew with that bitter over burnt taste. However, although the Char Siew was delicious, it still pales in comparison to the roast pork. If you have to choose between the two, the roast pork is definitely the winner.
Price: RM 24
The roast duck was equally delicious as well. It boasts light, crisp skin and tender, juicy meat that was flavourful but never too gamey. I like that the meat was not dry and rough like many other roast ducks out there. It was juicy, tender and flavorful.
