Located in a shophouse in Taman Berkeley, Klang, Bakery Cake House is an old-school bakery that has been operating since 1978. It is hard to notice its existence if you are not paying attention. The shopfront signboard has faded to the point of being almost unreadable, which also speaks for the long history of this bakery. Yet, it is a hidden gem that has garnered a steady stream of regular customers.

The shopfront is unmanned without any display cabinets. However, do not be fooled by its shopfront. It may look unassuming from its exterior, but the smell of freshly baked cakes and pastries will hit you the moment you step in!

We followed the delicious smell of butter and walked in straight to the kitchen. An elderly couple and son greeted us politely. In the kitchen, you will find all the freshly baked goods being simply laid out on the prep tables for customers to purchase.

The old-school bakery offers an assortment of mouthwatering baked goods, all prepared in the same old fashion way. All the baked goods here are made by fresh by hand and baked in small quantities daily. Some of the specialties include cream puffs, a variety of tarts, butter cake, marble cake, chocolate cake, ice cream cakes and a few other traditional biscuits.

Cream Puffs

The bakery is known for their cream puffs, which were made fresh everyday. We happened to see the elderly uncle filling the choux pastry with classic yellow custard filling when we were there.

The cream puffs were super light, incredibly fluffy, nd will almost melt-in-mouth with each bite. The custard filling was thick and smooth, but most importantly,  not overly sweet.

Mini Blueberry Cheese Tart

Mini Blueberry Cheese Tart is made with a wonderfully crisp and crumbly shell, filled with rich cream cheese filling and topped with blueberry filling. The shell itself was buttery delicious and the cream cheese filling was not overly sweet, with hints of fruity sourness.

Coconut Tart

The Coconut Tart has the same crisp, buttery crust as the cheese tart, and comes with a moist, custard-coated grated coconut filling. Baked until golden brown, the custard filling is smooth and silky with just the right amount of sweetness.

I also bought a packet of traditional Chinese biscuits, but I don't what this is called. They are very similar to traditional piglet biscuits, but these are stuffed generously with savory mung bean filling. The pastry was soft and fragrant. This was really good.

Butter Cake

We also bought their old-fashioned butter cake. Eating this evokes childhood memories. The cake is served warm and cut in thick rectangles. It was simple but very satisfying. The cake was buttery moist but not greasy. The aftertaste of butter left in my mouth made me want to have more. It was so addictively delicious.

CONCLUSION

I am glad that Bakery Cake House has preserved the traditional taste. It is always nice to see places like this have stood the test of time. I hope these old-school bakeries don't disappear. Do note that everything is in limited quantities, so once the item is sold out, you will have to come back tomorrow.
